Sector specialization as a competitive advantage for BBVA CIB
This strategy has driven BBVA CIB to deepen the specialization of its services and solidify its position as an industry expert in sectors that, due to their unique challenges, require targeted attention and in-depth knowledge. The new approach allows the bank to support clients more effectively and enhance the quality of strategic conversations—addressing core business needs with greater precision.
As part of this initiative, BBVA CIB has appointed global sector heads in industries identified as priorities due to their influence on current sustainability trends in both corporate and institutional spheres. For corporate clients, BBVA CIB has defined five key sectors: consumer, retail & healthcare; energy; industry & transportation; infrastructure & construction; and technology, media & telecommunications (TMT). On the institutional side, the bank focuses on banks, asset and wealth managers, insurance companies, public sector entities, sovereign wealth funds, and financial sponsors.
In this regard, Juan Blasco, Head of Institutional Business at BBVA CIB, explains, “sector specialization is a key element of our value proposition for institutional and corporate clients, allowing us to deliver better service in today’s challenging environment. We have specialized teams in client management, product development, and support. This setup enables us to gain a deep understanding of each client’s needs and deliver the best possible solutions.”

The institution has specialized teams focused on sustainability and ESG advisory, whose mission is to provide technical and strategic support to sector bankers and clients in the implementation of sustainable solutions.
In this way, the bank supports clients in facing today’s decarbonization challenges, with particular emphasis on the transformation of production models. Its value proposition, based on a deep understanding of industrial clients and combined with a global perspective, enables BBVA CIB to differentiate itself from market peers and help its wholesale clients lead the energy transition.
